Over the last few weeks, this graph has been all over the internet – it even popped up on A Photo Editor a few days ago, and after looking it over a few times, Chris and I started thinking… how do we actually spend our time? Could we figure it out and make our own graph?

Well. Here it is, in all of it’s glory, along with a handful of behind the scenes photos from the 2011 to illustrate the different pieces of the pie. See Chris' blog for the rest....

What Photography Has Given Me

It starts at Thanksgiving, the contemplation of what I'm thankful for...

Those thoughts layer each week - like a good lasagna. Thankfulness on the bottom, topped with retrospect from this last year, topped with anticipation of what 2012 will bring, then covered in a thick layer of warmth & the feeling that "life is good."

I am thankful for all of the obvious things - my amazing husband, my children, my friends, my extended family, my parents & my faith. All of which/whom have supported me & my obsession with photography. As I prepare to take a step back from work in 2012, I've been reflecting on what photography has given me...

1) Freedom - Freedom to wander, to play, to have a voice outside my own, to step inside other's realities. To simply walk out the door with a camera in hand & really document the world with intent.

2) Vision - My own & the vision of others - the ability to look at hundreds of photographs a week & still want to see more.

3) Patience - on so many levels! No explanation needed :-)

4) Courage - to photograph with & without permission. To exhibit - knowing an image might be ridiculed, but doing it anyway because it meant something to me.

5) Friendships - from the time I picked up a camera for the first time (30 years ago), I couldn't have possible imagined the number of people that I would meet, photograph, mentor, lean on, work with, & call my friends.

6) A Sense of Humor - photography can thicken your skin, make you laugh out loud, & frustrate the hell out of you all in one day, but at the end of the day, you have to be able to laugh at yourself.

7) Pride - I'm not sure I'd be the person I am today if I had chosen a different career path. I think part of my DNA contains D-76 & Fixer. Those countless hours of processing film in the dark, late nights of assembling portfolios, estimating, cold calling, questioning, perfecting, etc., may have been painful at times, but they built character.

The above is the aesthetic short list of what I've gained from being a visual artist. The business side is a whole 'nother story. So until there's time to pen that one, this video is a hilarious summation of what anyone who works in a service industry, sometimes experiences.....Cheers!

Four amazing women, a bus, 2 directors, lots of gear & the landscapes of New Mexico & Colorado all came together to create the official music video for the band The Trishas new release, titled "Drive." Jason Lindsey & Jon Holloway co-directed the video, which debuted on Dec. 15th. Some production stills below.

Ironically, none of the girls have the name "Trisha" :-)

Infamous for her decades long study of primates in Tanzania, Goodall now devotes her time to traveling the world, speaking on behalf of the Jane Goodall Institute. Chris Crisman shoots Jaromir Jagr for ESPN

As a long time hockey fan and PA native, I was pretty psyched when Chris said he'd be shooting Jaromir Jagr for ESPN. Jagr signed a one year contract this season with the Flyers after leaving the Rangers in 2008. Chris was only able to spend 5 minutes with Jagr (the equivalent of serving a minor penalty in the box:-), but they connected and had a few laughs in the process. 5 minutes is common when shooting celebrities & athletes, & sometimes even less. David Goldstein & Courageously Creative

Sometimes art chooses you, even if you don't choose it :-) A classic example is my friend David Goldstein, who was an imaging science major when we were in college.    His field of study was very rigid & technical - densitometer readings, charts, graphs, etc.   (It gave me hives watching him) My classes were so carefree - literally, days spent making great pictures, processing them, & discussing them.   Flash forward 20 years & David is a photographer & an accomplished painter with commissions & numerous gallery shows, and also a writer. His first book soon to be published by Simon & Schuster.   Somehow his creativity & love for art, prevailed over imaging science.

David has a great blog at: http://www.courageouslycreative.com/. So I asked him what has inspired him. Ironically his early inspirations came during high school from an unlikely source, his swim coach - Mrs. Julia M. Purpura.     "Beyond practices, I wasn’t unique but instead was among generations of children she opened her home to as she encouraged our talents in countless creative areas." - David

“Mrs. P.” passed away last week unfortunately. Greatly missed by all who were fortunate enough to get her support, she was quoted in her obituary as saying of her students “maybe the little spark I see will inspire them to achieve their dreams.”    Indeed she was right - at least for David.   Below is an image of David's taken while he lived in Hong Kong.

Since it's Wednesday & gloomy across half of the country, I'm craving a bit of color and warmth & pulled out one of my favorite Eggleston photos (below)....which is kind of funny since he is color blind :-)

His work always reminds me of the numerous things I love about photography and why I dedicated 4 years of study to it in arctic like conditions in Rochester, NY. So, I am curious about who or what inspired you to bring your passion to life. Was it a picture, person, place, painting, or sculpture? Maybe it was because you were bad at math but had a poetic voice inside that needed to become concrete outside of your thoughts :-)

Whew! This has been a helluva week! Happy Photographers, happy clients, & lots of hard drives going out. Chris, Ben, Jason, & Andrew were all on location while Sean was kicking back in Puerto Rico on vacation, raising a glass to us. (He's headed to Boston for a shoot next week, so a little R&R was in need)

We can't put up any production stills yet, so we'll leave you with well wishes for a great weekend, & a pic of the studio cat from one of our shoots. (thanks Ben:-)

Sean Busher in October PDN

How do you show motion in a 2-D World? That was a question we asked ourselves as Sean's still photography started moving more to web content motion and animation.

The answer was a given thanks to iPad technology, but we weren't sure if the theory of "if you build it, they will come" would ring true. But indeed it did.

Sean worked with a bookbinder to make the "orange box" you see below that incorporates both mediums, & I've been taking the integrated piece to meetings for validation that it is the best way to show the true capabilities. The iPad runs on a portfolio app with a small speaker for better sound, and has multiple folders to help separate the projects & demo reel.

A few days ago we congratulated the Beaches of Fort Myers-Sanibel on winning a 2010 Platinum Adrian award for best "Destination Advertising Campaign" in the world. Adrian awards are one of the most coveted awards in the Tourism industry, and Platinum awards are only given to the work judged most extraordinary from a field of 154 Gold winners. The campaign, which included TV, print, outdoor, rich media banners and mobile/social marketing components, was chosen from over 1,000 entries from around the globe & photographed by Jason Lindsey.

"I Get By With a Little Help from my Friends"

--Wanting to create a sustainable studio for years, Jason consulted with the Smart Energy Design Assistance Center, a division of the Univ. of Illinois, for suggestions on how to improve his space. Weatherizing, sealing, insulating, new windows, new HVAC, LED lights, solar power & a geothermal system were among the main changes. Then came the research on finding paints & sealers that were zero-VOC, meaning they contain no harmful or Volatile Organic Compounds. The last component was installing a Brita filter on the faucet to reduce any need for bottled water, replacing the original toilet that used 5 gallons of water to one that uses only 1.5, and planting native prairie plants. Not only did Jason reduce his carbon footprint, but he also reduced his monthly utilities by about $500 a month. Well worth the initial investment toward a greener world! Well done Jason & crew!
